Step-by-Step Instructions
  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Place ½ cup of unsalted butter in a 9x13 inch baking dish and allow it to melt in the oven for about 5 minutes until bubbly.
  2. In a large mixing bowl, whisk together 3 ½ cups of granulated sugar, 4 tablespoons of unsweetened cocoa powder, 2 cups of all-purpose flour, 2 teaspoons of baking powder, and ¼ teaspoon of salt until well combined. Gradually stir in 1 cup of milk and 2 teaspoons of vanilla extract until smooth. Pour the batter over the melted butter without stirring.
  3. In a separate bowl, combine the remaining 3 cups of granulated sugar and ½ cup of cocoa powder to create the topping. Sprinkle this mixture evenly across the batter. Carefully pour 3 cups of boiling water over the top without stirring.
  4. Place the dish in the preheated oven and bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the top layer is set and slightly firm, while the bottom remains gooey.
  5. Once baked, remove from oven and let cool for about 10 to 15 minutes. Serve warm, optionally topped with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.
