Description

Poor Man’s Pudding, also known as Pudding Chômeur, is a simple yet delightful dessert that combines a cake-like batter with a rich syrup made from brown sugar and hot water.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/4 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar, packed
  • 2 cups hot water

Instructions

  1. In a medium bowl, whisk together the flour, baking powder, salt, and granulated sugar.
  2. In another bowl, mix the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until well combined.
  3. Gradually add the wet ingredients to the dry ingredients, stirring until just combined.
  4. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease a 9×9-inch baking dish.
  5. Pour the batter into the prepared dish, spreading it evenly.
  6. In a separate bowl, combine the brown sugar and hot water, stirring until the sugar is dissolved.
  7. Carefully pour this mixture over the batter in the baking dish; do not stir.
  8. Bake in the preheated oven for 30-35 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and a toothpick inserted into the cake portion comes out clean.
  9. Allow to cool for about 10 minutes before serving.

Notes

  • This dessert is best enjoyed warm.
  • Serve with whipped cream or vanilla ice cream for an extra treat.
  • For a chocolate twist, add 1/2 cup of cocoa powder to the dry ingredients.
  • Substitute vanilla extract with almond extract for a different flavor profile.
